Both of us wanted a summer wedding, but with Robyn still competing, we knew we’d have to wait until she was done running, or another opportunity presented itself. In the meantime, it was an exciting time for both of us. After Robyn’s promising showing at that year’s World Championships, her fall training was equally as encouraging. By January, the steady progress she’d made set her up nicely for a four-month training camp in Adelaide, Australia. It was an ideal opportunity to generate some solid training with her coach and teammates in a warmer climate. It would enable all of them to return in the spring ready for the upcoming racing season.
Although her time Down Under had been successful, when Robyn returned she started to struggle physically with her training. Less than a week before she left for Europe and her first series of track meets, her blood work came back indicating that she had full-blown mono—her 1998 season was over.
In the meantime Skeet & Ike’s was thriving and occupying a good amount of Ian’s time, and mine. Even though the company was growing rapidly and I was enjoying a new career path, I was also getting the itch to teach and coach again. In September 1998, I enrolled in UBC’s 12-month Bachelor of Education post-degree program. My goal was to return to Shawnigan Lake School to teach art and design, and coach rowing.
That year was busy: attending school during the day, doing homework at night and working for Skeet & Ike’s combined for a hectic schedule. As spring approached, I looked forward to the three-month practicum.
For the most part, my first day went smoothly. Even though I wouldn’t see “action” until the second week, I was a bit nervous. I spent my days getting to know the students with whom I’d be working for the next few months. I hadn’t been in a classroom for a while and, unlike my experience at Shawnigan, these classes were large, and a few of the students had a bit more edge to them. It was going to be a good challenge.
Eventually, my chance to get up in front of the classroom arrived and, at the start of the second week, I began teaching. One afternoon, two of my students thought it would be fun to give the new student teacher a quick lesson on classroom management. We had been told that classroom management wouldn’t be our responsibility at the beginning of the practicum and that we could rely on our sponsor teachers to keep their classes in check. When the first shoe went sailing through the air, I stopped and looked at my sponsor teacher to see what he was going to do. He just kept reading the magazine in his lap. When the second shoe launched into the air, I stopped and asked the two guys responsible to leave the class and wait for me out in the hall. I continued with my lesson and got the rest of the class busy with their new assignment and then went to join my new friends.
